XJ coil-over rear shocks

Reducing sagging leaf springs with coil over shocks

My 99 XJ has had a sagging rear leaf issue for a while. Since this Jeep is just for street use, it has remained stock. To combat the rear sag, I have tried a couple of different air shocks like I run on my 91. But they always leak on this Cherokee for different odd reasons.

So I decided to try coil overs instead. I got these from Amazon: https://amzn.to/33MNivI

I began by lifting the Jeep and removing the old air shocks and tubing. I was worried about the upper mounting bolts but they came out easily. I had ordered a flag nut kit just in case but I did not use it.

When installing the coil-overs, they were just a little too long and I had to pull down on the axle on one side and actually compress the shock just a little on the other side. I used my under hoist jack to press the bottom of the shock up until it lined up with the bolt and then tapped it in place with a rubber hammer.

Once installed they gave just over a one and half inch lift to the back of the Jeep. This made it just about level. And I don’t have to worry about leaks. The ride was exactly the same as stock except now is ids less likely to bottom out on bumps.
